What do people find most challenging about the culture in Umag?

"Expats in Umag often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Croatian is a Slavic language and can be difficult to learn, especially for those who are used to Latin or Germanic languages. Another challenge is the slower pace of life, which can be frustrating for those used to a faster, more efficient pace. Things like administrative tasks or getting repairs done can take longer than expected. Understanding and adapting to local customs and traditions can also be challenging. For instance, Croatians are known for their hospitality and often expect guests to accept offers of food or drink. Refusing such offers can be seen as impolite. The bureaucracy in Croatia can also be a challenge for expats. Dealing with government agencies for things like visas, permits, and other official documents can be a slow and complicated process. Lastly, while Croatians are generally friendly and welcoming, it can take time to form close relationships. This can make it difficult for expats to feel fully integrated into the local community," said one expat who made the move to Umag.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Umag for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Umag for a while, the type of visa or residency document you need will depend on your nationality and the length of your stay. If you are a citizen of the European Union, European Economic Area, or Switzerland, you do not need a visa to enter Croatia. However, if you plan to stay for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a temporary residence permit. If you are a non-EU citizen and you plan to stay in Croatia for less than 90 days within a 180-day period, you may need a short-stay visa, depending on your nationality. Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, do not need a visa for short stays. If you are a non-EU citizen and you plan to stay in Croatia for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a long-stay visa before you arrive in the country. After you arrive, you will need to apply for a temporary residence permit. In addition to a visa or residence permit, you will need a valid passport to enter Croatia. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. If you plan to work or study in Croatia, you may need a work or student visa, even if you are an EU citizen. Please note that visa and residency requirements can change, so it's important to check the latest information from the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs or your local Croatian embassy or consulate before you travel," said one person in Umag.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Umag?

We asked people in Umag if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"When visiting Umag, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Firstly, avoid discussing sensitive topics such as the Yugoslav Wars and the country's political history. These topics can stir up strong emotions and it's best to steer clear of them unless initiated by a local. Secondly, Croatians are known for their hospitality and it's considered rude to refuse food or drink when offered. If you have dietary restrictions, politely explain them. Thirdly, punctuality is highly valued in Croatia. Being late for appointments or meetings can be seen as disrespectful. Fourthly, when greeting, a firm handshake is common among men, while women often kiss on the cheeks. However, wait for the woman to initiate the cheek kiss. Fifthly, tipping is customary in Croatia. In restaurants, it's common to leave a tip of around 10% of the bill. Lastly, Croatians are proud of their language and culture. Attempting to speak a few words in Croatian, even if it's just a simple "thank you" (hvala), can go a long way in showing respect and appreciation for their culture," remarked one member in Umag.
