"The current wisdom is to try any country on for size for a few months and Ecuador is no exception. And happily, the Ecuadorian government makes it reasonably easy to do, for up to six months. When you land and they stamp your passport that gives you a 90-day visa, Basically 3 months. The day after that visa expires you have to present yourself and your passport at an office of "Migración" where they will give you a slip of paper to take to a Banco Pacifico to pay $140 (not positive if that is still the amount but it was a few months ago for my step-son's Mexican fiancé). You take the payment voucher back to Migración and they stamp your passport for another 3 months. Problem solved. Happy exploration. That is the process for both Canadian and US visitors but I don't know the regulations for other countries outside of South America," said one expat who made the move to Cotacachi.

"On the whole I have experienced the Ecuadorians to be honest. As a people they are culturally extremely polite. In my estimation they rivel the French with their protocols of politeness. "Buenos días, "Buenas tardes," "buenas noches, " "Saludos." If you don't greet someone, they feel slighted. And they address you by title, "don Ernesto". "doña Maria". o "mi señora linda". which is something we would never dare say in the north "my pretty lady."," explained one expat living in Cotacachi, Ecuador.

"Although scrupulously polite, I have not found the Ecuadorian people to be particularly friendly or outgoing. And they are extremely protective of their privacy. Which is why they often live behind eight-foot-high walls with wire or broken bottles on top. Whether the fear is justified or not I can't say, but it seems to infect most everyone. It is very unusual to invite someone into your home, or to be invited. Mostly, in my experience (only one opinion mind you) socializing is done within the family, not by getting together with friends to tell stories and share meals. That is one difference I find really hard to take. And they love noise. They honk, they put a big speaker outside each store and blast music assuming that everyone wants to hear. To me it is a form of polution, pure and simple. Give me quiet any day," explained one foreigner living in Cotacachi, Ecuador.

"I can only speak of my own experiences with Ecuadorian Bureaucracy. I've been here five years, and currently hold a permanent resident's visa. If they can find a way to make any paperwork-based process more difficult they do. Without fail. From cédulas to driver's licenses, to getting married, which I gather you understand being, like me, married to an Ecuadorian. Or buying a car or land. Months of frustration. For example: my new cédula as a married person. Five trips by bus from Otavalo to Quitumbe (outside Quito) to the Registro Civil which deals with foreigners. Each trip 3-4 hours each way. Each time we went armed with all the documents we felt we could possibly need. Each time there was something lacking. "You were born in the States but are a Canadian?" "Yes, I've lived in Canada since I turned 23 and am a naturalized citizen. " "But can you prove you were born in the US?" "Here are my two passports, Canadian and US, both of which state I was born in New York." "But do you have your birth certificate?" "Yes, but not with me." Another trip back to Cotacachi and back to Quitumbe the next day." "But señor, this is the original." "Yes, by some miracle I still have it 73 years later," "But señor, the original is unacceptable as proof of anything." We need to see a copy, notarized and apostilled by the Secretary of State of New York." At this point, we gave up and contacted the lawyer in Cuenca who had organized my visas for me and she made it happen in two days, in Cuenca. Both the permanent visa and the cédula done on the same day. Worth every penny. And a road trip to boot," explained one expat living in Cotacachi, Ecuador.

"If you plan to stay in Cotacachi for an extended period, you will need a valid passport that is good for at least six months beyond the duration of your stay. If you plan to stay for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a visa extension or a temporary resident visa before your 90-day tourist visa expires. The temporary resident visa is valid for up to two years and can be renewed. You may also need to provide proof of financial means to support yourself during your stay. If you plan to work or study in Ecuador, you will need to apply for a specific work or student visa. It's also important to note that visa requirements can change, so it's always a good idea to check with the Ecuadorian embassy or consulate in your home country before you travel," said one person in Cotacachi.

"In Cotacachi, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid making negative comments about the indigenous culture or people, as this is considered highly disrespectful. When visiting churches or other religious sites, dress modestly and behave respectfully. Loud conversations or inappropriate behavior is frowned upon in these sacred places. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, as this can lead to heated debates and potential misunderstandings. It's also considered rude to refuse food or drink when offered by a local. Even if you're not hungry or thirsty, it's polite to accept and at least try a little. Punctuality is not highly valued in Ecuador, so don't be offended if locals are late to appointments or social gatherings. However, as a visitor, you should still strive to be on time. Bargaining is common in markets, but don't haggle too aggressively. It's important to remember that many vendors rely on these sales for their livelihood. Lastly, always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially indigenous locals. Some may find it offensive or intrusive," said one expat who made the move to Cotacachi.

"One important point to make that might make a difference: My Spanish is fluent so all of my conversations with doctors are in their native language, not mine. I never even ask if they speak English, and I don't know how many there are that do and to what degree. Another interesting point is more of a cultural difference. My wife accompanies me to all my doctor's visits and I to hers. We both address the issues with the doctors and are privy to their explanations. I find that very comforting. And there are times when I can't understand the doctor because of regional dialects and the ever-present masks and my wife, who speaks no English, doesn't translate, but rather paraphrases into language I can understand. Between the three of us clear communication usually results," commented a person living in Cotacachi, Ecuador.

"I've been here five years and for a while, I had a PO box in Otavalo but only ever received one letter, I had a package sent (a GPS Unit) from Western Canada that was sent via Canada Post to what is basically General Delivery, Cotatachi. It did arrive, by a miracle, six months to the day after it was sent. I only found out about it because I went to the post office to ask another question and they said there was a package. During the pandemic, both the Cotacachi and Otavalo post offices closed their doors. The one in Cotacachi is now a very nice coffee shop. In Otavalo I think it's just locked up. I had some documents that needed to be sent, signed and sent back north and did it all via DHL.! $125 CAD to send the envelope here and $65US to send it on. But it works. Other than municipalities there are no house or street addresses. Where we live it is virtually impossible to describe our location for deliveries, so I tell whatever entity is sending to send it to their local office and I go to pick it up. That works great. Be sure to include your local (cell) number as part of the address so they can phone you to let you know that it has arrived. We're currently waiting for my Ecuadorian wife's passport to be returned from the US Embassy with her US visitor's visa installed and I assume they will send it to the DHL office in Otavalo where we will pick it up. It's not an efficient work-around but it is better than the pony express, marginally," remarked one member in Cotacachi.

"We love Cotacachi, have become completely integrated here, started an animal rescue foundation and hospital, have now started an indigenous community project and have homesteaded a large and functioning animal farm. Ecuador is a dream come true," explained one expat living in Cotacachi, Ecuador.
