What do people find most challenging about the culture in Pezenas?
"Expats in Pezenas can find it challenging to adjust to the slower pace of life in the region. While connections and amenities in major cities like Paris tend to be more accessible and well-developed, life in Pezenas can be more rural and less developed, making it difficult for expats to get around. Additionally, cultural differences can be an obstacle for expats in the area. While people tend to be welcoming to outsiders, their attitude towards conversation and relationships typically has more formal boundaries than in other parts of the world. Local customs such as traditional cuisine, etiquette, and values can also be difficult to navigate," said one person in Pezenas, France.
What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Pezenas for a while?
"You need a permanent resident visa which you must obtain 6 weeks before you enter the EU, a carte de sejour, which takes a while to get once you are here. Lines are long, often slow. Most bureaucrats are polite and do wish to help. The gendarmie here has often given me good advice on avoiding unecessary lines and delays," said one expat who made the move to Pezenas.
"If I will be in Pezenas for a while, I would need a valid passport and a long stay visa from the French consulate in my home country. Once I am in France, I would then need to apply for a residence permit at the Préfecture de l'Hérault in Montpellier in order for me to legally stay in the country for a certain period of time," explained one foreigner living in Pezenas, France, France.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Pezenas?
We asked people in Pezenas if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:
"Oh God yes! I once asked a guy about making a local dish. He told me his mother made the best. The next thing I know we're on his little moto going to her house -- where she gives me a cooking lesson, feeds me, and we spend the night learning why the local wine is better. People here are really nice, outgoing, sharing. If you break through the first barriers, you've made it. Another time I asked someone where they got a really nice shirt, the next day I got an all morning shopping tour," said one expat in Pezenas.
"In Pezenas, it is important to respect local customs, so it is important to avoid unwittingly causing offense. It is considered rude to arrive late when meeting people, so it is important to be punctual. Pointing with a finger is also seen as impolite, and instead it is better to indicate a direction with a nod. Furthermore, it is important to respond to polite inquiries with a formal and respectful answer, rather than an overly casual one. To avoid appearing disrespectful, it is best to dress modestly in public and avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts," remarked one member in Pezenas, France.
