What do I need to know before moving to Balatonfured?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Balatonfured, they said:

"Expats considering retiring in Balatonfured, should be aware of several factors before making the move. Firstly, it is essential to research the cost of living, which is generally lower than in Western European countries, but may vary depending on lifestyle choices. Housing options range from renting apartments to purchasing property, with prices varying based on location and size. Healthcare in Hungary is of good quality, with both public and private options available. Expats should ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage, either through the Hungarian national healthcare system or a private provider. Language can be a barrier, as Hungarian is a unique and challenging language to learn. While many locals, especially younger generations, speak English, it is beneficial for expats to learn some basic Hungarian phrases to help with daily interactions. The climate in Balatonfured is characterized by warm summers and cold winters, with temperatures ranging from below freezing in the winter months to highs of around 30°C (86°F) in the summer. Expats should be prepared for these seasonal changes and plan their wardrobes accordingly. Balatonfured is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer months, due to its location on the shores of Lake Balaton. Expats should be prepared for an influx of visitors during this time, which can lead to increased prices and crowded public spaces. Public transportation is available in Balatonfured, with buses and trains connecting the town to other parts of Hungary. However, owning a car can provide more flexibility and convenience for exploring the surrounding areas. Expats should familiarize themselves with local customs and cultural norms, as well as the political climate in Hungary. It is essential to respect local traditions and be aware of any current events that may impact daily life. Finally, it is crucial for expats to build a social network and engage with both the local and expat communities. This can help ease the transition to a new country and provide valuable support and resources during the retirement years," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Balatonfured.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Balatonfured?

"Expats in Balatonfured, may find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Hungarian is a unique and complex language that can be difficult to learn. Additionally, they might struggle with understanding and adapting to local customs and traditions, such as social etiquette, greetings, and gift-giving practices. Navigating the bureaucracy and dealing with paperwork can also be a challenge, especially if they are not fluent in Hungarian. Furthermore, expats may find it difficult to make local friends and integrate into the community, as Hungarians can sometimes be reserved and take time to open up to newcomers. Finally, adjusting to the local cuisine, which can be heavy and spicy, might be a challenge for some expats," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Balatonfured.

"There is a defeatist feeling in many Hungarians that things are bad and getting worse. But, on the opposite scale there is this overwhelming desire to get back the territories lost following WWI. I also find it a bit disconcerting that most Hungarians do not understand they have constantly been on the wrong side of every war they have fought in. It is weird to have a national day of mourning for Stalingrad for the loss of 200,000 Hungarian soldiers there but not recognizing that they were complicit in the Nazi attempts of Hitler to conquer Europe. The same is true for the attempted and failed revolution against Soviet occupation in 1956 only 11 years after the war ended in a country still being kept under control following the defeat of Germany and the Axis nations. So, they have supported Germany twice and lost heavily but still have this amazing desire for increased nationality even now that they are members of the EU and much of this is angering their neighbors which acquired the territories lost following the wars. I find this nationalism and increased right-wing behavior somewhat disconcerting," explained one person living in Balatonfured, Hungary.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Balatonfured for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Balatonfüred, Hungary for a short period (up to 90 days within a 180-day period), you may need a Schengen visa, depending on your nationality. For a long-term stay (more than 90 days), you will need to apply for a Hungarian national visa (D-type visa) and a residence permit. It is essential to check the specific requirements based on your nationality and the purpose of your stay, such as work, study, or family reunification. Additionally, ensure that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay," said one person in Balatonfured.
