We asked people in Vientiane if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"It is important to be respectful of the local culture when visiting Vientiane. It is important to dress modestly and to avoid public displays of affection. It is also important to be aware of the local customs and to be respectful of religious sites and ceremonies. It is also important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local food customs and to avoid eating with your hands or pointing with your feet. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local customs regarding gifts and to avoid giving gifts that are too expensive or extravagant," said one person in Vientiane.

What are healthcare services like in Vientiane?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Vientiane, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, are relatively limited compared to those in more developed countries. The city has a few public hospitals, such as Mahosot Hospital and Sethathirath Hospital, which provide basic medical care and emergency services. However, these hospitals often face challenges such as overcrowding, lack of modern equipment, and shortages of medical supplies and trained staff. In addition to public hospitals, there are several private clinics and hospitals in Vientiane that offer a higher standard of care, albeit at a higher cost. These private facilities often have more modern equipment, better-trained staff, and a wider range of services, including specialist care and diagnostic services. Some of the well-known private hospitals in the city include the Alliance International Medical Centre and the Australian Clinic. Pharmacies can be found throughout Vientiane, but the availability of medications may be limited, and counterfeit drugs can be a concern. It is advisable for visitors to bring their own supply of prescription medications when traveling to Laos. For more complex medical issues or emergencies, patients may need to be evacuated to neighboring countries, such as Thailand, where healthcare services are more advanced. Many expatriates and tourists in Laos opt for medical insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation. Overall, while basic healthcare services are available in Vientiane, the quality and availability of care may not meet the standards of more developed countries. Visitors and expatriates should take necessary precautions and consider obtaining appropriate health insurance coverage when staying in Laos," explained one expat living in Vientiane, Laos.

What are the pros and cons of living in Vientiane?

"Expats and digital nomads living in Vientiane, often like the laid-back atmosphere, friendly locals, and the relatively low cost of living. They appreciate the rich cultural heritage, beautiful temples, and the Mekong River, which offers stunning views and recreational activities. The city's growing café culture, with numerous coffee shops and restaurants, is also a plus for many. On the other hand, some expats and digital nomads may dislike the limited entertainment options, as Vientiane is a small city with a slower pace of life compared to other Southeast Asian capitals. The lack of public transportation and the need to rely on tuk-tuks or motorbikes for getting around can be inconvenient for some. Additionally, the quality of healthcare facilities may not be up to the standards that expats from Western countries are used to, and they may need to travel to neighboring countries for more advanced medical treatments. The hot and humid climate can also be a challenge for those not accustomed to tropical weather. Furthermore, the language barrier can be an issue, as not all locals speak English, making communication and daily tasks more difficult. Lastly, the internet speed and reliability may not be ideal for digital nomads who rely on a stable connection for their work," remarked one member in Vientiane.
