Where should I live in Clearwater Bay?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Clearwater Bay involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget. This will help you narrow down your options and make your search more efficient. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Clearwater Bay. Some areas may be more residential, while others may be closer to shops and restaurants. Consider your lifestyle and preferences when choosing a neighborhood. Once you have a general idea of where you want to live, you can start looking for available properties. There are several online real estate platforms that you can use, such as Squarefoot, 28Hse, and Spacious. These websites allow you to filter properties based on location, price, size, and other features. You can also hire a real estate agent to help you with your search. An agent can provide you with insider knowledge about the market, negotiate prices on your behalf, and handle paperwork. When you find a property that you're interested in, arrange a viewing. This will give you a chance to inspect the property in person and ask any questions you may have. Finally, once you've found a place that meets your needs and fits your budget, you can make an offer. If your offer is accepted, you'll need to sign a lease and pay a deposit. Remember to read the lease carefully before signing. It should include details about the rent, deposit, lease term, and any other conditions or responsibilities. If you're not comfortable with the terms, don't hesitate to negotiate or seek legal advice. Finding a place to live in Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong can be a complex process, but with careful planning and research, you can find a home that's right for you," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Clearwater Bay.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Clearwater Bay?

"Expats in Clearwater Bay often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Cantonese is the primary language spoken and not everyone speaks English. They also struggle with the high cost of living, particularly in terms of housing and schooling. The densely populated environment can be overwhelming for those used to more spacious living conditions. The fast-paced lifestyle and work culture in Hong Kong can also be stressful for expats. Additionally, understanding and adapting to local customs and etiquette, such as gift-giving traditions and dining manners, can be difficult for newcomers. Lastly, the humid subtropical climate of Hong Kong can be uncomfortable for those who are not used to such weather conditions," explained one person living in Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Clearwater Bay?

We asked people in Clearwater Bay if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"When visiting Clearwater Bay, it's important to respect local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Avoid discussing sensitive political topics such as the relationship between Hong Kong and mainland China, as it can be a contentious issue. In Hong Kong, it's considered rude to point with your index finger, so try to use your whole hand instead. Also, avoid touching people's heads as it's seen as disrespectful, since the head is considered the most sacred part of the body. When using chopsticks, don't stick them vertically into your food, especially rice, as it resembles a ritual for the dead. Also, don't tap your chopsticks on the edge of your bowl, as it's associated with begging. If you're invited to someone's home, it's customary to bring a gift. However, avoid giving clocks as gifts because the word for 'clock' sounds like the word for 'death' in Cantonese. When it comes to dress code, Hong Kong is quite westernized, but it's still important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Lastly, remember to always be polite and patient. Hong Kong is a bustling city and things can get hectic, but locals value good manners and respect," explained one person living in Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong.
