Where should I live in Monterrey?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Monterrey is to research online. Popular websites such as Airbnb, VRBO and Home Away offer a variety of rental listings from apartments, condos, houses, and villas. Additionally, online forums, such as Mexico's largest expat site Mexconnect, can provide valuable information about housing options in Monterrey. In addition to online research, it is also advisable to contact local real estate agents, who can provide potential renters with more personalized housing options and insight into Monterrey's real estate markets," explained one person living in Monterrey, Mexico.

"We needed an area that was convenient to my husband's job. The plant he works at is outside the city in an area that is not very nice, so we had to strike a balance between amenities and convenience. We bought our property so we also wanted to find an area where we thought that prices may rise over the next few years. We ended up choosing a property in an undeveloped area on the outskirts of the city. It was particularly appealing as we knew the surrounding areas were earmarked for development. We also have the convenience of having the green areas of the countryside on our doorstep, with the convenience of the city just 5 minutes drive away," said one expat in Monterrey.

What do I need to know before moving to Monterrey?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Monterrey, they said:

"It is important for expats looking to retire in Monterrey to understand the city's climate. Monterrey has a semi-arid climate that brings low humidity, lots of sunshine, and warm temperatures all year round. Expats should also research the cost of living in Monterrey, and be aware that it can be higher than in other Mexican cities and towns. Additionally, researching the healthcare system and having insurance to cover any expenses is important for expats. Knowing Spanish is not essential for life in Monterrey, but speaking some Spanish can be beneficial for completing everyday tasks. Lastly, investing in a reputable real estate agent is recommended when looking for accommodations in Monterrey," explained one expat living in Monterrey, Mexico.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Monterrey?

"Expats in Monterrey find the language barrier to be one of the most significant challenges, as English is not widely spoken. Another challenge is getting used to the slower pace of life which can be quite different from their home countries. Additionally, the locals tend to be quite traditional and conservative, which can be an adjustment for some expats. Understanding local customs and learning the vernacular can take some time, further challenging the experience," explained one expat living in Monterrey, Mexico.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Monterrey for a while?

"If you plan to stay in Monterrey for an extended period of time, you must obtain a Visitor's Visa from the Mexican Embassy in your home country. Once you arrive in Mexico, you must apply for an authorized period of stay from the local immigration office and will be issued a Form FM3 or Form FM2, depending on the duration of your stay. You will also need to provide proof of financial stability, such as bank statements or pay stubs. Once you have received the appropriate documents, it is important to keep them with you at all times and to renew them regularly," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Monterrey.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Monterrey?

We asked people in Monterrey if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"In Monterrey, it is important to remain respectful to their culture and customs. It is considered impolite to talk about politics and religion in public, as well as to criticize or be overly critical of the country or its people. Refrain from using negative terms when addressing people or expressing yourself, as this is considered very rude. You should also try to dress modestly and appropriately, as showing too much skin or wearing clothing with offensive slogans can be offensive. Additionally, avoid discussing taboo subjects such as illegal activities, poverty, and class disparity. Do not use profanity and show respect for local laws at all times," remarked one member in Monterrey.

What are healthcare services like in Monterrey?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Monterrey, they replied:

"Monterrey offers a wide range of healthcare services, including both public and private hospitals and clinics. The public healthcare system is provided by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE). These institutions offer a variety of services, including primary care, specialty care, emergency care, and preventive care. Private healthcare services are also available in Monterrey, with a variety of hospitals and clinics offering a range of services, including general and specialized care. Additionally, Monterrey is home to a number of medical research centers and universities, providing access to advanced medical treatments and technologies," said a member in Monterrey.

" It depends on finances and age. If you're a professional moving to Mexico for business reasons, then you'll no doubt be given a private insurance plan. For those still young, private insurance is cheaper than in the USA but still ultimately unaffordable. Those working for public or private sector employers should automatically be enlisted in the IMSS which is our national system free to the user. Roughy equivalent to the UK's NHS, if you need something major it is excellent. For minor problems you may care to go private. Besides the IMSS, if you're not working you can enroll in the govenment's Seguro Popular system which is probably a bit inferior to the IMSS but again will protect you against major events. Next, I recommend paying monthly to subscribe to a private ambulance/outpatient service such as EMME. The price is reasonable and they come quickly with a fully equipped ambulance and medical team. They also have an outpatient walk-in centre open until late. Most pharmacies have an attached doctor available during work hours (sometimes morning only) and you can get a quick consultation either free or at insignificant cost - very useful if you need an antibiotic because these need a prescription now. ," explained one person living in Monterrey, Mexico.

What are the pros and cons of living in Monterrey?

"Expats and digital nomads living in Monterrey often appreciate the city's vibrant culture, friendly locals, and affordable cost of living. They also enjoy the city's proximity to the beach and the Sierra Madre mountains, as well as its excellent food and nightlife. On the other hand, some expats and digital nomads may find the city's air pollution and traffic to be a bit overwhelming. Additionally, the language barrier can be a challenge for those who don't speak Spanish," remarked one member in Monterrey.

"We were lucky, after visiting dozens of properties, to find one in three days at a good price with everything we were looking for. It's 25 minutes drive from the big city, on the National Road. It's 2,000 square metres of garden with a currently unoccupied extra 3,000 square metres, contiguous. The original owner had a vision so this house is not the usual concrete block structure, it's a reinforced concrete frame, with non-load-bearing walls of adobe and double glazed windows and doors. It has a boveda roof. A new type of life: in my old age I find this the perfect project because it keeps me active and there's always something to do," explained one expat living in Monterrey, Mexico.
