How do I meet people in Siargao Island?

When we asked people living in Siargao Island about club and activities where newcomers can meet others, they responded:

"Expats in Siargao Island, often join various clubs and activities to meet people and immerse themselves in the local culture. Surfing is a popular activity on the island, and joining a local surf club or taking lessons can be a great way to meet people. There are also yoga classes, fitness clubs, and wellness retreats that attract a diverse group of individuals, including many expats. In addition to sports and wellness activities, expats often participate in environmental initiatives, such as beach clean-ups and coral reef conservation projects. These activities not only contribute to preserving the island's natural beauty but also provide opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Expats can also engage in the local community by attending local festivals and events. These gatherings are a great way to meet locals and other expats, learn about the local culture, and participate in traditional activities. Dining is another social activity that brings people together in Siargao. The island has a vibrant food scene with a variety of restaurants and cafes that serve both local and international cuisine. Many of these establishments are popular hangout spots for the expat community. Language exchange meetups are also common in Siargao. These gatherings allow expats to practice their Tagalog or Visayan language skills with locals, and in return, they can help locals improve their English. Finally, volunteering is another way expats meet people in Siargao. Many local organizations and schools welcome the help of foreign volunteers, and this can be a rewarding way to give back to the community and make new friends," remarked one member in Siargao Island.

"Life for expats and digital nomads in Siargao Island is often described as a tropical paradise. The island is known for its laid-back lifestyle, stunning landscapes, and friendly locals. Expats and digital nomads enjoy the island's world-class surfing spots, pristine beaches, and lush palm forests. We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"To find a place to live in Siargao Island, you can start by researching online on websites such as Airbnb, Booking.com, and Agoda, where you can find various accommodation options like hotels, resorts, guesthouses, and vacation rentals. You can also join Facebook groups dedicated to Siargao Island, where locals and expats often share information about available rentals and accommodations. Another option is to visit local real estate agencies or ask for recommendations from friends or acquaintances who have visited or lived in Siargao. Once you have shortlisted a few options, make sure to read reviews and compare prices before making a reservation. If possible, visit the island and explore different areas to get a feel for the neighborhoods and find a place that suits your preferences and budget," remarked one member in Siargao Island.

What do I need to know before moving to Siargao Island?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Siargao Island, they said:

"Expats considering retirement in Siargao Island should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, the cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, but it's important to have a reliable source of income or savings. The official language is Filipino, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Healthcare facilities on the island are basic, so it's recommended to have health insurance that covers medical evacuation in case of serious illness or injury. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to January, and a dry season from March to October. The island is known for its laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty, including world-class surfing spots, pristine beaches, and lush landscapes. However, it's less developed than other parts of the Philippines, which means fewer amenities and services. The Philippines has a retirement visa program that allows foreigners to live in the country indefinitely, but there are certain financial requirements to meet. It's also important to note that foreign ownership of land is prohibited in the Philippines, but there are ways around this, such as leasing land or buying a condominium. Safety can be a concern in some parts of the Philippines, but Siargao is generally considered safe for expats. However, it's always important to stay aware of your surroundings and take basic safety precautions. Finally, integrating into the local community and respecting local customs and traditions is key to enjoying a fulfilling retirement in Siargao," explained one person living in Siargao Island, Philippines.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Siargao Island?

We asked people in Siargao Island if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"When visiting Siargao Island in the Philippines, it is important to show respect for local customs and traditions. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially when visiting religious sites or local communities, as modesty is highly valued in Filipino culture. Be mindful of personal space and avoid touching people, especially on the head, as this is considered disrespectful. When interacting with locals, always use polite language and avoid raising your voice or displaying anger, as this is considered rude. If invited to someone's home, it is customary to bring a small gift, such as food or flowers, to show appreciation for the host's hospitality. When dining with locals, wait for the host to invite you to start eating before digging in, and avoid using your left hand to handle food, as it is considered unclean. It is also considered impolite to leave food on your plate, so try to finish everything you are served. Avoid discussing sensitive topics, such as politics or religion, as these can lead to uncomfortable conversations. Finally, always ask for permission before taking photographs of people or their homes, as this shows respect for their privacy and personal space," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Siargao Island.
