Where should I live in Tabuk?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Tabuk involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a larger family home. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Tabuk to find one that suits your lifestyle and needs. Some popular residential areas include Al Ula, Al Khadra, and Al Salam. Consider factors such as proximity to work or school, safety, and the availability of amenities like shops, restaurants, and parks. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate portals that list properties for rent or sale in Tabuk, such as Bayut, Propertyfinder, and expatriates.com. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, property type, size, and price range. You can also hire a local real estate agent to help you in your search. They can provide valuable insight into the local market, arrange viewings, and negotiate with landlords or sellers on your behalf. Once you've found a property you're interested in, make sure to inspect it thoroughly before making a decision. Check for any signs of damage or disrepair, and ask about any additional costs such as maintenance fees or utility bills. Finally, once you've decided on a property, you'll need to sign a lease or purchase agreement. Make sure to read the contract carefully and understand all the terms and conditions before signing. If you're renting, you'll typically need to provide a security deposit and the first month's rent upfront. If you're buying, you'll need to arrange for a mortgage or other financing. Remember, finding a place to live can take time, so be patient and don't rush the process. With careful planning and research, you can find a great place to live in Tabuk," remarked one member in Tabuk.

What do people appreciate most about the culture in Tabuk?

"Expats in Tabuk often appreciate the warm hospitality and friendliness of the local people. They are known for their welcoming nature and willingness to help newcomers settle in. The rich history and heritage of Tabuk is another aspect that expats appreciate. The city is home to several historical sites and museums that offer a glimpse into the region's past. Expats also value the strong sense of community in Tabuk. The locals have a deep respect for family and societal bonds, which is reflected in their daily lives and traditions. The local cuisine is another highlight for expats living in Tabuk. Saudi Arabian food is known for its diverse flavors and unique dishes, and Tabuk is no exception. Lastly, expats appreciate the slower pace of life in Tabuk compared to larger cities. What do people find most challenging about the culture in Tabuk?

"Expats in Tabuk often find the strict adherence to Islamic customs and laws to be challenging, especially if they come from more liberal cultures. The segregation of genders in public spaces, the requirement for women to wear an abaya, and the prohibition of alcohol can be difficult to adjust to. The extreme heat during summer months can also be a challenge for those not accustomed to such climates. The language barrier can also be a significant challenge, as Arabic is the primary language spoken and not everyone may speak English. Additionally, the slower pace of life and the different working hours, which are influenced by prayer times, can be hard to adapt to. Lastly, the restrictions on entertainment and social activities, due to conservative cultural norms, can limit options for leisure and recreation," explained one expat living in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Tabuk for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Tabuk for an extended period, you will need to secure the appropriate visa. The type of visa you need depends on the purpose of your stay. If you are going for work, you will need a work visa, which requires a sponsor in Saudi Arabia, usually your employer. For this, you will need a letter from your employer stating the nature of your work, duration of your stay, and place of employment. This letter must be attested by the Saudi Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you are going for business, you will need a business visa. This also requires a sponsor, who can be a Saudi Arabian company or individual. If you are going for religious purposes, you will need a Hajj or Umrah visa. In all cases, you will need a valid passport with at least six months validity, completed application forms, passport-sized photos, and proof of residence in your home country. You may also need to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases, depending on the current health regulations. Please note that Saudi Arabia has strict laws and customs, and you should familiarize yourself with these before your stay. Also, it's important to note that the visa application process can be complex and time-consuming, so it's recommended to start the process well in advance of your planned stay. Lastly, always check the latest visa and residency requirements with the Saudi Arabian embassy or consulate in your home country, as these can change without notice," said one expat in Tabuk.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Tabuk?

We asked people in Tabuk if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"In Tabuk, it is considered disrespectful to show the soles of your feet or shoes, as they are considered dirty. Avoid using your left hand for eating or passing objects, as it is considered unclean in the Saudi culture. Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon in Saudi Arabia, including in Tabuk. It is considered impolite to refuse an offer of coffee or tea when visiting someone's home. Women should dress modestly in public, covering their shoulders and knees, and in some cases, their hair, in accordance with local customs. Men should avoid wearing shorts in public, as it is considered disrespectful. It is considered rude to ask about a Saudi woman unless she is your close relative or wife. Avoid discussing politics and religion, as these topics can be sensitive in Saudi Arabia. Do not take photographs of people without their permission, especially women. During the holy month of Ramadan, do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours, as it is considered disrespectful. Alcohol is strictly prohibited in Saudi Arabia, including in Tabuk, and penalties can be severe. Pork is also prohibited in Saudi Arabia, so avoid asking for it in restaurants or shops. It is important to be punctual for business meetings, but social events often start later than scheduled. Avoid making critical or negative comments about the Saudi royal family. Do not bring any items that are considered haram (forbidden) in Islam into the country, as this can lead to severe penalties. Always greet the eldest person first in a group, as a sign of respect. Avoid interrupting a Muslim during their prayer times," said one person in Tabuk.
