Where should I live in Yanbu?

We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Yanbu involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a large villa, depending on your needs and financial capability. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Yanbu to find one that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Some popular residential areas include the Royal Commission area, which is known for its well-planned infrastructure and amenities, and Yanbu Al-Bahr, which is closer to the sea and has a more relaxed atmosphere. Once you've identified your preferred area, you can start looking for available properties. There are several online real estate platforms that list properties for rent or sale in Yanbu, such as Bayut, Propertyfinder, and expatriates.com. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, property type, size, and price range. Alternatively, you can engage the services of a real estate agent. They can provide you with expert advice and help you navigate the local property market. Make sure to choose a reputable agent who is registered with the Saudi Ministry of Housing. Before finalizing any deal, it's important to visit the property in person. This will give you a better idea of its condition, the surrounding area, and the facilities available. It's also a good opportunity to meet the landlord or property manager and discuss the terms of the lease or sale. Finally, once you've found a property you're happy with, you'll need to sign a contract and pay a deposit. In Saudi Arabia, rental contracts are usually for a period of one year and require a deposit of one or two months' rent. If you're buying a property, you'll need to pay a down payment and arrange for a mortgage if necessary. Remember, it's always advisable to seek legal advice before signing any contract to ensure that your rights are protected," explained one person living in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.

What do people appreciate most about the culture in Yanbu?

"Expats in Yanbu often appreciate the warm hospitality and friendliness of the local people. They are known for their welcoming nature and willingness to help newcomers settle in. The local culture in Yanbu is rich and diverse, with a deep history and unique traditions that expats find fascinating. The local festivals, traditional music, and dance are particularly appreciated for their vibrancy and authenticity. Expats also appreciate the strong sense of community in Yanbu. The locals are very family-oriented, which creates a close-knit and supportive environment that many expats find comforting. The local cuisine is another aspect of the culture that expats in Yanbu enjoy. Saudi Arabian food is flavorful and diverse, with a wide range of dishes to try. Lastly, the importance of religion in daily life is something that many expats come to appreciate. The call to prayer that echoes throughout the city five times a day serves as a reminder of the deep spirituality that underpins Saudi Arabian culture," said one person in Yanbu.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Yanbu?

"Expats in Yanbu often find the strict adherence to Islamic customs and laws challenging, especially those related to dress codes and gender segregation. The language barrier can also be a significant challenge, as Arabic is the primary language spoken and not everyone may speak English. The extreme heat during summer months can be difficult to adjust to, particularly for those from cooler climates. The restrictions on alcohol and pork, which are both prohibited in Saudi Arabia, can also be a significant adjustment for many expats. Additionally, the slower pace of life and the concept of 'Saudi time', where punctuality is not always prioritized, can be frustrating for those used to more time-conscious cultures. Lastly, the limited entertainment options and restrictions on certain forms of entertainment can also be challenging for some expats," said one expat who made the move to Yanbu.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Yanbu for a while?

"If you are planning to stay in Yanbu for an extended period, you will need to obtain a visa. The type of visa you need depends on the purpose of your stay. If you are going for work, you will need a work visa, which requires a sponsor in Saudi Arabia, usually your employer. If you are going for religious purposes, you will need a Hajj or Umrah visa. In addition to the visa, you will also need a valid passport with at least six months validity remaining. You may also need to provide proof of accommodation and return travel, as well as proof of financial means to support yourself during your stay. It's also important to note that Saudi Arabia has strict laws and customs, and you should familiarize yourself with these before your arrival. For example, you may need to provide a letter of invitation or introduction, and women under the age of 30 are required to travel with a Mahram (a male relative). Lastly, you should also check with the Saudi Arabian embassy or consulate in your home country for the most up-to-date information, as visa requirements can change," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Yanbu.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Yanbu?

We asked people in Yanbu if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:

"In Yanbu, it is considered disrespectful to show the soles of your feet or shoes, as they are considered dirty. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, especially between men and women, due to the conservative nature of Saudi society. It is also considered impolite to refuse an offer of coffee or tea when visiting someone's home. Women are expected to dress modestly, covering their hair, arms, and legs. Men should also dress conservatively, avoiding shorts and sleeveless shirts. During the holy month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is considered disrespectful. It is considered rude to interrupt someone while they are praying. Taking photographs of people, especially women, without their permission is considered a serious breach of etiquette. Discussing politics, especially criticism of the Saudi royal family, is considered taboo. It is also considered impolite to ask about a person's female relatives. In business meetings, it is customary to engage in small talk before getting down to business. It is considered disrespectful to use your left hand for eating or for passing objects to others, as it is traditionally seen as the 'unclean' hand. Alcohol is strictly prohibited in Saudi Arabia, and it is illegal to bring it into the country. Finally, it is important to remember that Friday is the Islamic holy day, and many businesses will be closed," explained one person living in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
