Summary: Digital nomads and expats talk about what it is like to live in Al Wajh, Saudi Arabia. Get tips from others living in Al Wajh about where to live, how to find a place to live, pros and cons of living in Al Wajh and more.
Where should I live in Al Wajh?
We asked digital nomads and expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:
"Finding a place to live in Al Wajh involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a larger family home. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Al Wajh to find one that suits your lifestyle and needs. Consider factors such as proximity to work or school, safety, and the availability of amenities such as shops, restaurants, and parks. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate portals that list properties for rent or sale in Al Wajh, such as Bayut, Propertyfinder, and expatriates.com. These websites allow you to filter your search based on factors such as price, size, and location. You can also consider hiring a real estate agent to help with your search. They can provide valuable local knowledge and help negotiate the best price for you. Once you've found a property you're interested in, arrange a viewing. This will give you a chance to inspect the property and ask any questions you may have. If you're happy with the property, you can then proceed to negotiate the terms of the lease or purchase. Make sure to read the contract carefully before signing, and don't hesitate to ask for clarification if there's anything you don't understand. Finally, once the contract is signed, you can arrange for the move. This may involve hiring a moving company, setting up utilities, and purchasing furniture and other necessities. Remember, finding a place to live can take time, so it's important to be patient and not rush the process," said one person in Al Wajh.
What do people appreciate most about the culture in Al Wajh?
"Expats in Al Wajh often appreciate the warm hospitality and friendliness of the local people. They are often impressed by the deep sense of community and family values that are deeply ingrained in the local culture. The rich history and heritage of the region, reflected in its architecture and traditions, is another aspect that expats find fascinating. Many also appreciate the local cuisine, which offers a variety of unique and flavorful dishes. The peaceful lifestyle and slower pace of life in Al Wajh compared to bigger cities is also something that many expats find appealing. Lastly, the religious devotion and spirituality of the locals, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan, is something that many expats respect and admire," explained one expat living in Al Wajh, Saudi Arabia.
What do people find most challenging about the culture in Al Wajh?
"Expats in Al Wajh often find the language barrier to be a significant challenge, as Arabic is the primary language spoken and not everyone is fluent in English. The strict adherence to Islamic customs and laws can also be difficult for expats to adjust to, particularly for women who are required to wear an abaya in public. The extreme heat and harsh climate can also be a challenge for those not accustomed to such conditions. Additionally, the cultural norms around socializing and gender segregation can be difficult to navigate for those from more liberal societies. The restrictions on alcohol and pork, which are forbidden in Islam, can also be a challenge for expats who are used to these being part of their diet. Lastly, the slower pace of life and the concept of 'Saudi time', where punctuality is not always prioritized, can be frustrating for those used to more time-conscious cultures," said one person in Al Wajh.
What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Al Wajh for a while?
"If you are planning to stay in Al Wajh for an extended period, you will need to secure the appropriate visa. The type of visa you need depends on the purpose of your stay. If you are going for work, you will need a work visa. This requires a sponsorship from a Saudi company or individual. The sponsor will send you an invitation letter, which you will need to submit along with your visa application. If you are going for business, you will need a business visa. This also requires a sponsorship from a Saudi company or individual. If you are going for study, you will need a student visa. This requires an acceptance letter from a Saudi educational institution. If you are going for religious purposes, you will need a Hajj or Umrah visa. In addition to the visa, you will also need a valid passport with at least six months' validity remaining. You may also need to provide proof of accommodation and financial means to support yourself during your stay. Please note that visa requirements can change, so it's always a good idea to check with the Saudi embassy or consulate in your home country before you travel," said one person in Al Wajh.

What cultural blunders should I try to avoid making in Al Wajh?
We asked people in Al Wajh if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. They wrote:
"In Al Wajh, it is important to respect the local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, covering your arms and legs, and women should also cover their hair. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are considered inappropriate. Do not consume alcohol or pork, as they are forbidden in Islam. During the holy month of Ramadan, do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours. Always use your right hand for eating and greeting, as the left hand is considered unclean. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, and women's rights. Do not take photographs of people without their permission, especially women. Also, do not enter a mosque unless you are a Muslim. Always show respect towards the Saudi royal family and the country's laws and regulations," remarked one member in Al Wajh.
