What are the schools in Windhoek like?

"Windhoek is home to a number of excellent international and bilingual schools. The International School of Namibia (ISN) is a private, non-profit school that offers an international curriculum for students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. ISN is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization, and offers a rigorous academic program that prepares students for success in college and beyond. The school also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and art. The Windhoek International School (WIS) is another excellent international school in Windhoek. WIS is a private, non-profit school that offers an international curriculum for students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization, and offers a rigorous academic program that prepares students for success in college and beyond. WIS also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and art. The Windhoek Bilingual School (WBS) is a private, non-profit school that offers a bilingual curriculum for students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization, and offers a rigorous academic program that prepares students for success in college and beyond. WBS also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and art. Overall, Windhoek is home to a number of excellent international and bilingual schools that offer a rigorous academic program and a wide range of extracurricular activities," remarked one parent with kids at in Windhoek.

"Hands down the best choice in Windhoek. Americans should not be turned off by the IB, on the contrary it is the only matriculation recognised outside of Namibia. The other private schools do not offer IB and thus the options are very limited for graduates who wish to study in Europe or US. Even to study in South Africa, students will find they may have to do additional courses. You are paying more but honestly there is no comparison with the quality of teaching - WIS learners are taught to be inquirers, they do not do rote learning and there is a lot of hands-on experimentation. My daughter is doing a class called Theory of Knowledge (age 16) and it pretty much offers university-level content. It's also a diverse and open-minded school: no uniforms, kids are accepted for who they, lots of diversity, respect etc ... unparalleled in Windhoek," explained one expat living in Windhoek, Namibia.

What are the pros and cons of living in Windhoek?

"Expats and digital nomads living in Windhoek, often appreciate the city's friendly and welcoming locals, who make it easy for newcomers to feel at home. They also enjoy the pleasant climate, with warm days and cool nights, as well as the beautiful natural surroundings, including stunning landscapes and wildlife. The relatively low cost of living is another attractive feature for expats and digital nomads, as it allows them to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. Additionally, the city offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, wildlife safaris, and sandboarding, which cater to adventure enthusiasts. However, there are also some challenges that expats and digital nomads may face while living in Windhoek. One of the main concerns is the limited availability of reliable and fast internet, which can be a significant drawback for those who rely on it for work or staying connected with friends and family. Another issue is the lack of public transportation, which can make getting around the city difficult without a car. This can be particularly challenging for those who are not comfortable driving on the left side of the road or navigating the city's sometimes poorly maintained roads. Safety and security can also be a concern, as petty crime and theft are not uncommon in Windhoek. Expats and digital nomads are advised to take precautions, such as not walking alone at night and being vigilant with their belongings. Lastly, some expats and digital nomads may find the limited variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options in Windhoek to be a downside. While there are some good restaurants and shops, the city does not offer the same level of variety and cultural experiences as larger, more cosmopolitan cities," remarked one expat in Windhoek.
