What do I need to know before moving to Kampong Thom?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Kampong Thom, they said:

"Kampong Thom is a province in central Cambodia that is rich in history and culture, and expats moving there should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, the official language is Khmer, so learning some basic phrases or hiring a translator may be necessary. English is not widely spoken, especially in rural areas. The cost of living in Kampong Thom is relatively low compared to Western countries, but expats should be prepared for a different standard of living. Housing, food, and transportation are generally affordable, but healthcare can be expensive and the quality varies. The climate in Kampong Thom is tropical, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. Expats should be prepared for high temperatures and humidity, as well as heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. The local cuisine is heavily based on rice and fish, with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Western food is not commonly found, especially outside of the capital city, Phnom Penh. The healthcare system in Kampong Thom, like much of Cambodia, is underdeveloped. Expats should ensure they have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation, as serious conditions may require treatment in a neighboring country. Public transportation is limited in Kampong Thom, so expats may need to consider purchasing a car or motorbike for getting around. The culture in Kampong Thom is deeply rooted in Buddhism, and expats should respect local customs and traditions. This includes dressing modestly, especially when visiting temples and other religious sites. Internet and mobile phone coverage can be unreliable, especially in rural areas. Expats should be prepared for occasional disruptions to these services. Finally, while Cambodia is generally safe, expats should be aware of petty crime such as pickpocketing and bag snatching, particularly in crowded areas. It's advisable to take basic precautions to protect personal belongings," remarked one expat living in Kampong Thom, Cambodia.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Kampong Thom?

"A typical expat home or apartment in Kampong Thom, is often a blend of traditional Khmer architecture and modern amenities. The homes are usually spacious, with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a large living area, and a fully equipped kitchen. They often feature high ceilings and tiled floors, which help keep the home cool in the hot Cambodian climate. Many homes also have a balcony or a small garden area, providing a space for outdoor relaxation. The homes are usually furnished, with comfortable sofas, dining tables, beds, and wardrobes. Modern amenities such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and cable TV are typically included. The kitchen is usually equipped with a refrigerator, a gas stove, and sometimes a microwave or an oven. The homes are often located in safe, quiet neighborhoods, close to local markets, restaurants, and other amenities. Some expat homes may be located within gated communities, offering additional security. Despite being in a relatively rural province, many homes in Kampong Thom are surprisingly modern and comfortable, catering to the needs of expats. However, it's important to note that the standard of living can vary greatly depending on the specific location and budget. Some expats may choose to live in more modest accommodations, such as traditional wooden houses, while others may opt for more luxurious villas or apartments," wrote a member in Kampong Thom.

What is the average cost of housing in Kampong Thom?

If you are thinking about moving to Kampong Thom, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Kampong Thom can vary greatly depending on the type and location of the property. However, it is generally considered to be quite affordable compared to many Western countries. For instance, a modest house in the city center may cost a few hundred dollars per month to rent, while purchasing a property could range from a few tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand dollars. It's important to note that these prices can fluctuate based on various factors such as market conditions, the state of the property, and its proximity to amenities," said one expat in Kampong Thom.

Where should I setup a bank account in Kampong Thom?

We asked expats in Kampong Thom what banks they use and there advice about banking. They advised:

"Expats considering retirement in Kampong Thom, should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, the cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, making it an attractive option for those on a fixed income. However, healthcare facilities may not be up to Western standards, particularly in rural areas like Kampong Thom, so it's important to have a comprehensive health insurance plan. The official language is Khmer, and while English is spoken in tourist areas and by some younger people, it's less common in rural areas. Learning some basic Khmer phrases can be very helpful. The local culture is deeply rooted in Buddhism and respect for elders is paramount. It's important to respect local customs and traditions to integrate into the community. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. It can get very hot and humid, especially in the dry season, which may be uncomfortable for some people. The local cuisine is delicious and diverse, with rice and fish being staples. However, Western food can be harder to find in rural areas, so be prepared to adapt your diet. Safety can be a concern, particularly road safety, as traffic laws are not always adhered to. It's also important to be aware of the risk of landmines in rural areas, a legacy of the country's civil war. Finally, while Cambodia has a relatively low cost of living, it's important to have a solid financial plan in place. The country does not have a bilateral Social Security agreement with the U.S, so American retirees cannot receive Social Security benefits while living there," commented one expat who made the move to Kampong Thom.

What do expats in Kampong Thom appreciate most about the local culture?

"Expats in Kampong Thom, often appreciate the warm and welcoming nature of the local people. They are known for their hospitality and willingness to help, making foreigners feel at home. The rich history and heritage of the area, visible in the many temples and historical sites, is another aspect that expats admire. They also appreciate the slower pace of life in Kampong Thom, which offers a break from the hustle and bustle of city living. The local cuisine, which is a blend of traditional Cambodian flavors with influences from neighboring countries, is another highlight for many expats. Lastly, the natural beauty of the region, with its lush landscapes and scenic views, is something that expats in Kampong Thom deeply appreciate," wrote a member in Kampong Thom.

What do expats find most challenging?

"Expats in Kampong Thom often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. The majority of locals speak Khmer, and while English is taught in schools, it is not widely spoken, especially among the older population. Another challenge is adapting to the local customs and etiquette. Cambodian culture is deeply rooted in Buddhism and has a strong emphasis on respect and politeness, which can be difficult for foreigners to fully understand and adhere to. The pace of life in Kampong Thom can also be a challenge for expats. The lifestyle is generally slower and more relaxed compared to Western countries, which can be frustrating for those used to a faster, more efficient pace. Food can also be a challenge for some expats. Cambodian cuisine is unique and can be quite different from Western food, with a heavy reliance on rice, fish, and fermented products. Lastly, the lack of certain amenities and services that expats may be used to in their home countries can be challenging. This includes reliable internet, modern healthcare facilities, and international standard schools," remarked one expat living in Kampong Thom, Cambodia.

Is there a lot of crime in Kampong Thom?

We asked people if there is a lot of crime. They answered:

"Kampong Thom, like many other parts of Cambodia, experiences some level of crime. However, it is generally considered to be relatively safe, especially when compared to larger cities in the country. The most common types of crime reported are petty theft and pickpocketing, particularly in crowded areas. Violent crime is relatively rare, but it does occur occasionally. It's also worth noting that the crime rate can fluctuate, and it's always important for residents and visitors to take precautions to protect their personal safety. Despite these issues, many people live in and visit Kampong Thom without experiencing any crime," commented one expat who made the move to Kampong Thom.
