"1. It is important to check the visa requirements and make sure you have the necessary documents before making the move to Guangzhou. 2. As an expat, it is beneficial to learn a few phrases and words in the local language of Mandarin, since it is the predominant language spoken in Guangzhou. 3. Register with the local police station within 24 hours of arrival in order to obtain the residence permit. 4. Healthcare in Guangzhou is of a very high standard, however many basic treatments and medicines are not covered by the state health insurance and will need to be paid for out-of-pocket. 5. With a vast amount of diverse cuisine available, there are plenty of options for expats looking for dining out, although it is recommended to research the local restaurants before eating. 6. Although public transport is very good, with the majority of the population speaking Mandarin, it can be difficult to get around without knowing the language," remarked one expat who made the move to Guangzhou, China.

Will I be able to find a job in Guangzhou?

When we asked people about industries and career opportunities in Guangzhou, they reponded:

"Guangzhou was the first city in China to open up to outside businesses. There are tons of foreign owned factories. everything really is made in China. Most of it made in Guangzhou. It's a really industrialized city -- polluted, crowded, and somewhat ugly. But along with that, comes a much larger variety of jobs and more job opporutnities and a much larger and more varied expat community. The smaller cities that are more quaint, are also more secluded," said one expat who made the move to Guangzhou.

"Foreigners often have teaching, hospitality, and engineering jobs in Guangzhou. They can also find work in research and development, software engineering, sales and marketing, and finance. Other jobs internationally-minded foreigners might find in Guangzhou include project management, business consulting, and logistics," explained one expat living in Guangzhou, China, China.

"Crime in Guangzhou varies depending on the area. Overall, the city is relatively safe, with low levels of violent crime reported. Although petty crime, such as pickpocketing, is common in crowded areas and tourist spots. It is advisable to be mindful of your possessions when out in public," said one expat in Guangzhou, China.

Is there a lot of diversity? Are people in Guangzhou accepting of differences?

"Yes, Guangzhou is a highly diverse city with people coming from all parts of the country and around the world. In Guangzhou, there are people of many different backgrounds, religions, and cultures and they generally coexist peacefully. The people of Guangzhou generally tolerate and accept people with differing beliefs and cultures, and they are incredibly friendly and open-minded," wrote a member in Guangzhou, China.

"Guangzhou is very diverse. I have friends from South Africa, Nigeria, Scotland, Ecuador, Paraguay, Brazil, Australia, etc. The Chinese people are very very open and accepting of other people and other cultures. The city always has operas, ballets, orchestras, plays, etc. most of which come from all parts of the world. What are the visa & residency requirements in Guangzhou?

"In order to visit Guangzhou, travellers must first obtain a visa either from a Chinese embassy or through a third-party visa service. To apply for a visa, prospective visitors must submit a valid passport, a visa application form, and documents demonstrating their intent to leave China within the duration of their visa. If a visitor intends to stay in Guangzhou longer than the duration of their visa, they must apply for residency abroad. The process for obtaining residency first requires an applicant to obtain a physical residence permit from a Chinese embassy, consulate, or public security agency. The applicant must submit a valid passport, visa, and other necessary documents to demonstrate identity and reason for residency. The applicant may also need to provide proof of a criminal background check and residency registration.
