What do I need to know before moving to Zlin?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Zlin, they said:

"Zlin is a city in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic, known for its rich history and industrial heritage. The official language is Czech, but English is also widely spoken, especially by younger generations and in the business sector. The cost of living in Zlin is relatively low compared to other European cities, making it an attractive place for expats. The city has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses and trams, making it easy to get around. Zlin is known for its high quality of education, with several universities and schools offering a wide range of programs. The city has a continental climate, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Zlin offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities, including museums, theaters, parks, and sports facilities. The city is also known for its architecture, particularly the functionalist buildings designed by the famous Czech architect Le Corbusier. Healthcare in Zlin is of a high standard, with several hospitals and clinics available for both emergency and routine care. The city is safe and has a low crime rate, but like any other place, it's advisable to take standard precautions. Czech cuisine is hearty and diverse, with dishes like goulash, dumplings, and trdelnik being popular. Zlin is in the Central European Time Zone, and the currency used is the Czech koruna. The city is also home to the famous Bata Shoes company, and the Bata Shoe Museum is a popular tourist attraction. Renting property in Zlin is straightforward, with a range of options available from apartments to family homes. It's important to note that while Czech people are generally friendly and welcoming, they can also be quite reserved and private. Finally, it's worth noting that Zlin is a great base for exploring the rest of the Czech Republic, with excellent transport links to other major cities," wrote a member in Zlin.

How do I find a place to live in Zlin?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Zlinublic involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a shared apartment to a single-family home. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Zlin to find one that suits your lifestyle and needs. Some popular neighborhoods include the city center, Prštné, and Malenovice. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online platforms where you can find listings for rentals in Zlin, such as Sreality.cz, Bezrealitky.cz, and Flatfy.cz. These websites allow you to filter your search based on your preferences, such as the number of bedrooms, price range, and location. In addition to online listings, you can also contact local real estate agencies. They can provide you with more personalized assistance and may have access to listings that are not advertised online. When you find a place that you're interested in, you should arrange a viewing. This will give you a chance to see the property in person and ask any questions you may have. Before signing a lease, make sure to read it carefully and understand all the terms and conditions. If you're not fluent in Czech, you might want to have a translator or a local friend help you with this. Finally, once you've signed the lease, you'll need to set up utilities and internet service, and then you can move into your new home in Zlin," wrote a member in Zlin.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Zlin?

"A typical expat home or apartment in Zlinublic, is often located in the city center or in the quieter residential areas. These homes are usually fully furnished, featuring a blend of modern and traditional Czech design elements. The living room is often spacious, with comfortable seating, a television, and sometimes a fireplace. The kitchen is usually equipped with essential appliances such as a refrigerator, stove, oven, and sometimes a dishwasher. Bedrooms in these homes are typically cozy, with a bed, wardrobe, and often a study desk. Some larger apartments may also have a separate dining area. Bathrooms are usually modern and well-maintained, often equipped with a shower or a bathtub. Many expat homes in Zlin also come with additional amenities such as a balcony or a small garden, offering a view of the city or the surrounding greenery. Some apartments may also have access to shared facilities like a gym, swimming pool, or laundry room. The buildings themselves often have a charming, historical exterior, reflecting the city's rich architectural heritage. Despite this, they are usually well-renovated and equipped with modern conveniences such as central heating, high-speed internet, and secure entry systems. The location of these homes often allows easy access to local amenities such as supermarkets, restaurants, schools, and public transportation, making them convenient for expats living in the city," wrote one member in Zlin.

What is the average cost of housing in Zlin?

If you are thinking about moving to Zlin, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Zlinublic, can vary greatly depending on the type and location of the property. As of recent data, the cost of purchasing an apartment in the city center may be moderately high, while in the outskirts it is relatively cheaper. For renting, a one-bedroom apartment in the city center is quite affordable, while a similar apartment outside the city center is even less expensive. However, these prices can fluctify based on market conditions and other factors," remarked one expat who made the move to Zlin.

What should I bring when moving to Zlin?

People living in Zlin were asked what three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They wrote:

"When moving to Zlinublic, you should pack a variety of clothing to accommodate for the city's four distinct seasons. This includes warm clothing for the winter months, such as heavy coats, scarves, gloves, and hats, as well as lighter clothing for the summer, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals. You should also pack a good pair of walking shoes, as Zlin is a walkable city with many pedestrian zones. Don't forget to pack your personal documents, including your passport, visa, and any other necessary identification. If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring enough to last until you can arrange for a refill in your new city. Pack any electronics you use regularly, such as your laptop, phone, and chargers. You may also want to bring some personal items to make your new place feel like home, such as photos, favorite books, or small keepsakes. If you're planning on cooking, you might want to pack some basic kitchen utensils, as these can be expensive to buy new. Lastly, don't forget to pack toiletries and other personal care items, as these can be more expensive in the Czech Republic compared to other countries," explained one expat living in Zlin, Czechia.

Where should I setup a bank account in Zlin?

We asked expats in Zlin what banks they use and there advice about banking. They advised:

"Zlin, also known as Gottwaldov, is a city in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic, known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and high quality of life. Before retiring in Zlin, expats should know that the official language is Czech, and while English is commonly spoken in tourist areas and by younger generations, it may not be widely spoken by the older population. The cost of living in Zlin is relatively low compared to other European cities, making it an attractive place for retirees. However, it's important to understand the local currency, the Czech koruna, and the exchange rate with your home currency. Healthcare in the Czech Republic is of a high standard, with both public and private options available. Expats retiring in Zlin should ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage, either through a local provider or an international one. Zlin has a continental climate, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Expats from warmer climates may need time to adjust to the colder weather. The city is known for its cultural offerings, including numerous museums, galleries, and theaters. It's also home to several festivals throughout the year, providing plenty of opportunities for socializing and entertainment. Public transportation in Zlin is reliable and affordable, with a network of buses and trams covering the city. However, many areas are also easily walkable, and cycling is a popular mode of transport. The Czech Republic is part of the Schengen Area, which allows for free movement between member countries. However, expats from outside this area may need a visa or residence permit to stay in Zlin long-term. Finally, it's important to understand the local customs and etiquette in Zlin. Czech people are generally polite and reserved, and it's customary to greet people with a handshake and to say "Dobrý den" (Good day) when entering shops and restaurants," said one expat in Zlin.

What do expats in Zlin appreciate most about the local culture?

"Expats in Zlinublic, often appreciate the rich history and architecture of the city, including the unique functionalist style buildings. They also value the local culture's emphasis on family and community, which is reflected in the numerous festivals and community events held throughout the year. The local cuisine, particularly the beer and traditional Czech dishes, is another aspect that expats enjoy. They also appreciate the city's commitment to education and the arts, with several museums, galleries, and a well-regarded university. The locals' love for nature and outdoor activities, evident in the well-maintained parks and hiking trails, is another aspect that expats in Zlin find appealing. Lastly, expats often commend the safety of the city and the welcoming, friendly nature of its residents," wrote one member in Zlin.

What do expats find most challenging?

"Expats in Zlinublic, often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Czech is a Slavic language that is considered difficult to learn, especially for English speakers. Another challenge is the reserved nature of Czech people. They are known for their politeness and respect for personal space, which can sometimes be interpreted as coldness or aloofness by foreigners. This can make it difficult for expats to form close relationships with locals. Understanding and adapting to the local customs and traditions can also be challenging. For instance, Czechs have specific etiquette for dining and social gatherings that may be unfamiliar to foreigners. The Czech Republic has a very different work culture compared to other countries. The work-life balance may be different than what expats are used to, with longer working hours and less flexibility. Lastly, navigating the bureaucracy can be a challenge for expats in Zlin. Dealing with paperwork, especially for visas or work permits, can be a complex and time-consuming process," remarked one expat living in Zlin, Czechia.

Is there a lot of crime in Zlin?

We asked people if there is a lot of crime. They answered:

"Zlin, a city in the Czech Republic, is generally considered to be a safe place to live and visit. The crime rate is relatively low compared to other cities in the country. Most of the crimes that do occur are minor, such as petty theft or vandalism. Violent crimes are rare, and the city has a strong police presence that helps to maintain order and safety. The residents of Zlin typically feel secure in their city, and tourists are usually able to explore without fear of crime. However, like any city, it is always important to stay vigilant and take basic safety precautions," remarked one expat who made the move to Zlin.
