Furthermore, some areas may be more expensive to live than others and it is advisable to research housing costs and availability before making a move. How do I find a place to live in Lyon?

"If you're looking for a place to live in Lyon, there are several options to consider. What should I bring when moving to Lyon?

"When you are moving to Lyon, make sure to pack the basics such as comfortable clothing, shoes and personal toiletries. Bring some rain gear, such as an umbrella and waterproof jacket, since Lyon experiences occasional rain showers. Bring some items to help you adapt to the culture, such as books and films in French, which will give you an idea of the local culture. An international electrical adapter is also a must in order to use any electronics safely. Additionally, don’t forget to pack some favorite items from home to create the feeling of home in your new home," remarked one expat living in Lyon, France, France.

"Expats considering retiring in Lyon should be aware of their healthcare options, the cost of living, and average monthly expenses. Will I be able to find a job in Lyon?

"Lyon is an old city with a great history but it has been developing and there have been made many investments recently which are being carried on. The modern Lyon has been created. So we have the Confuance district with new buildings, we have new modern museums, we have new shopping centres and mostly new companies invest in here. There are new start ups also appearing in Lyon. You can find work in new type of industries like online space as well as very established brands are here. Lyon is a headquarter of Interpol and Euronews just to name a few," wrote a member in Lyon.

"Foreigners often work in Lyon in professional, service, and hospitality industries. Job opportunities range from teaching English, working in customer service at multinational companies, to being a chef in a restaurant. Other job options include being an au pair, barista, nanny, and freelance writer. "Expats in Lyon often find adapting to the local culture challenging due to the different attitudes to punctuality and directness. French people often take a more relaxed approach to arriving for appointments or events on time and their direct communication style can be off-putting for newcomers not used to such directness. Is there a lot of crime in Lyon?

"Like in other cities, Lyon does experience some crime. However, crime rates in Lyon remain relatively low compared to other large cities in France. Residents report feeling safe in their neighborhoods and the city has a low violent crime rate. Property crime, such as pickpocketing, is more common. Tourists should be particularly aware of their belongings in crowded areas, such as museums and tourist attractions," said one expat in Lyon, France.

Is there a lot of diversity? Are people in Lyon accepting of differences?

"There is no problems with this here. There are many churches different religious groups you can attend. I didn't feel any pressure but only welcomed in new communities," remarked one expat who made the move to Lyon.

"Yes, there is a lot of diversity in Lyon. People from different countries, cultures and backgrounds all call Lyon home. This creates a unique and vibrant environment, where different perspectives are welcomed. The people of Lyon are very accepting and tolerant of different cultures, religions and lifestyles. What are the schools in Lyon like?

"The best international school in Lyon is the International School of Lyon (ISL). ISL is a well-respected international school offering a high-quality, English-speaking education to over 700 pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade students of nearly 60 nationalities. ISL provides both the French and IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculums, giving students the opportunity to choose their academic pathway. Another acclaimed international school in Lyon is the International Elementary School of Lyon (IESL). "Healthcare and health insurance in Lyon can be expensive. The cost of healthcare in France is generally higher than in other countries, and health insurance premiums can be costly. Is the cost of living in Lyon high?

We asked people about the cost of living in Lyon, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Lyon is quite high compared to other parts of the country and a higher than average cost compared to other countries in the European Union. Rental prices for a nice 1 bedroom apartment can run between 1,300 - 1,600 US Dollars a month and a nice 2 bedroom apartment between 1,800 - 2,200 US Dollars a month. Eating dinner at a moderately priced restaurant would cost around 25 to 35 US Dollars per person," said an expat in Lyon.

What are the visa & residency requirements in Lyon?

"To apply for a visa to stay in Lyon for more than 90 days, it is necessary to apply for a long-stay visa at a consulate or embassy of France. The documents required for the application include a valid passport or travel document, the residence permit application form with three photographs, proof of accommodation, proof of financial independence and of health insurance. Additional documents may be requested depending on the type of visa. To apply for residency in Lyon, France, the applicant should submit a copy of his/her valid passport, proof of accommodation and a certificate of enrollment in an institute of higher education. They will also be required to provide a report on criminal history, proof of a bank account and proof of fiscal residence. The application will be reviewed within two to three months, and if accepted, the residence permit will be issued. The residence permit is usually valid for one year but can be extended," said one expat living in Lyon.
