When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Repulse Bay, they said:

"Repulse Bay is one of the most luxurious residential areas in Hong Kong, known for its high-end properties and beautiful beach. The cost of living in Repulse Bay is significantly higher than in other parts of Hong Kong, with rent for apartments and houses being particularly expensive. The area is home to a number of international schools, making it a popular choice for expat families with children. Public transportation in Repulse Bay is reliable and efficient, with regular bus services connecting the area to other parts of Hong Kong. Despite being a residential area, Repulse Bay has a good selection of restaurants, cafes, and shops, so you won't have to travel far for dining or shopping. The area is also home to several luxury hotels and resorts, which often have facilities such as gyms and swimming pools that are open to non-guests for a fee. Repulse Bay is a popular tourist destination, so it can get crowded, particularly on weekends and public holidays. The area is known for its outdoor activities, with opportunities for hiking, swimming, and water sports. While English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, learning some basic Cantonese phrases can be helpful. Repulse Bay offers a range of options from luxury apartments to detached houses. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate platforms that list properties for rent or sale in Repulse Bay. Websites like Squarefoot, 28Hse, and Spacious are popular choices. You can filter your search based on your preferences such as the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and other amenities. It's also a good idea to engage a real estate agent who specializes in Repulse Bay properties. They can provide you with expert advice and help you navigate the local real estate market. Once you've found a potential place, arrange a viewing. This will give you a better sense of the property's condition, its proximity to amenities, and the neighborhood. If you're satisfied with the property, you can proceed to negotiate the terms and conditions of the lease or purchase. Finally, once everything is agreed upon, you can sign the contract. Make sure to read it carefully and understand all the terms before signing. The buildings themselves are often well-maintained, with 24-hour security and concierge services," remarked one expat living in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

What is the average cost of housing in Repulse Bay?

If you are thinking about moving to Repulse Bay, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Repulse Bay is quite high due to its status as one of the most luxurious residential areas in the city. Prices can vary greatly depending on the size and specific location of the property, but on average, you can expect to pay several million US dollars for a home in this area. Some of the most expensive properties in Repulse Bay can even reach up to tens of millions of dollars. It's also worth noting that rental prices are also quite steep, with luxury apartments often costing several thousand dollars per month," said one expat who made the move to Repulse Bay.

What should I bring when moving to Repulse Bay?

People living in Repulse Bay were asked what three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They wrote:

"When moving to Repulse Bay, you should pack a variety of clothing suitable for a subtropical climate, including lightweight clothing for the hot and humid summers, and warmer clothing for the cooler winters. Rain gear, such as a waterproof jacket and umbrella, is also essential due to the frequent rain showers and typhoons. Pack your important documents, such as your passport, visa, and other identification, as well as any necessary medical records and prescriptions. Don't forget your electronics, including your phone, laptop, and any necessary chargers or adapters. If you're planning on cooking, you might want to bring some of your favorite non-perishable food items, as they may be hard to find in local grocery stores. Similarly, if you have favorite toiletries or personal care items, consider bringing a supply with you, as brands may vary. Bring any necessary items for work or school, such as textbooks or office supplies. If you're moving with children, don't forget their favorite toys or comfort items to help them adjust to the new environment. Lastly, consider packing items that will make your new place feel like home, such as photos, decorations, or favorite books. Remember, you can always buy furniture and larger household items once you arrive to save space in your luggage," explained one expat living in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

We asked expats in Repulse Bay what banks they use and there advice about banking. They advised:

"Expats considering retirement in Repulse Bay should be aware that it is one of the most expensive areas in Hong Kong, known for its luxury residential properties. The cost of living is high, including groceries, dining, and healthcare. The official language is Cantonese, but English is widely spoken due to the high expat population. The healthcare system in Hong Kong is excellent, with both public and private options available. However, private healthcare can be expensive, so it's advisable to have comprehensive health insurance. Repulse Bay is known for its beautiful beach, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. It's also home to a number of high-end restaurants and shops. Public transportation in Hong Kong is efficient and reliable, with options including buses, trams, and the MTR (Mass Transit Railway). Taxis are also readily available. Hong Kong has a subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. Typhoons can occur between May and November. Hong Kong's tax system is relatively straightforward, with low personal income tax rates. However, it's recommended to seek advice from a tax professional to understand potential liabilities. Hong Kong is a safe city with a low crime rate, but like any major city, it's important to take standard precautions. Finally, while Hong Kong is politically part of China, it operates under a "one country, two systems" principle, which means it has its own legal system and more freedoms than mainland China. However, recent political tensions have led to protests and changes in the city's autonomy, which could impact the expat experience," said one expat in Repulse Bay.

What do expats in Repulse Bay appreciate most about the local culture?

"Expats in Repulse Bay often appreciate the local culture's emphasis on family and community. They enjoy the vibrant and diverse food scene, which offers a wide range of cuisines from traditional Cantonese to international dishes. Many expats also appreciate the local festivals and celebrations, which provide a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Hong Kong. The locals' respect for nature and the environment, as seen in the well-maintained beaches and parks, is another aspect that expats admire. The blend of Eastern and Western influences in the local culture, architecture, and lifestyle is also something that expats in Repulse Bay find appealing. Lastly, the safety and cleanliness of the area, coupled with the locals' politeness and helpfulness, make living in Repulse Bay a pleasant experience for many expats," said one expat in Repulse Bay.

What do expats find most challenging?

"Expats in Repulse Bay often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Cantonese is the primary language spoken and not everyone is fluent in English. The high cost of living can also be a significant challenge, as Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world. The fast-paced lifestyle and work culture can be overwhelming for some, with long working hours and high expectations for productivity. Additionally, the dense population and lack of personal space can be a shock for those used to more spacious living conditions. Lastly, understanding and adapting to local customs and etiquette, such as gift-giving traditions and dining manners, can also pose a challenge for expats," remarked one expat living in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

Is there a lot of crime in Repulse Bay?

We asked people if there is a lot of crime. They answered:

"Repulse Bay, is generally considered a safe and affluent residential area with a relatively low crime rate. The area is well-patrolled and monitored, contributing to its reputation as a secure neighborhood. However, like any other place, it is not entirely free from crime. Occasional incidents of petty crimes such as theft or burglary may occur. Violent crimes are rare, and the residents enjoy a peaceful and secure environment. The local police force is efficient and responsive, further ensuring the safety of the residents. Overall, Repulse Bay is a safe place to live and visit," wrote a member in Repulse Bay.
