Additionally, you can contact real estate agents in the area who can help you find a suitable place to live. You can also look for rental postings on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Finally, you can ask friends and family who live in Abu Dhabi for recommendations," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Abu Dhabi.

"Villa; no. Most live in apartments or townhouses; some live in villas (equivalent to a single family house)," said one expat who made the move to Abu Dhabi.
"Expat homes and apartments in Abu Dhabi are typically modern and luxurious, with high-end amenities such as marble floors, high ceilings, and large windows. Many of the apartments come with balconies that offer stunning views of the city skyline. Expats can also expect to find a range of modern appliances, such as air conditioning, dishwashers, and washing machines. The apartments are usually located in secure, gated communities with access to a range of facilities, such as swimming pools, gyms, and playgrounds," explained one foreigner living in Abu Dhabi, the UAE.
What is the average cost of housing in Abu Dhabi?
If you are thinking about moving to Abu Dhabi, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:
"The cost of housing in Abu Dhabi can vary greatly depending on the area and type of property. Generally, the average cost of renting an apartment in Abu Dhabi is around AED 8,000 to AED 12,000 per month, while the average cost of buying a property is around AED 1,500 to AED 2,500 per square foot," said one person in Abu Dhabi.
"Much Much higher. A four-bedroom house or apartment in a convenient area can cost $100,000 a year. Most expats negotiate a relocation package where their employer pays for their housing," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Abu Dhabi.
Should I buy or rent a home in Abu Dhabi?
If you have not spent a lot of time in Abu Dhabi, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:
"Buying a home in Abu Dhabi can be a great investment, as the city is a major hub for business and tourism. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in the city, as well as the availability of housing. Renting a home in Abu Dhabi can be a great option for those who are not ready to commit to buying a home, as it allows for more flexibility and can be more cost-effective in the short-term. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Abu Dhabi should be based on individual needs and preferences," remarked one member in Abu Dhabi.
What do I need to know when buying property in Abu Dhabi?
When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Abu Dhabi, they said:
"When buying property in Abu Dhabi, it is important to be aware of the regulations in place. It is important to undertake due diligence, research what is available in the market, and find a reliable real estate agent to support you in the process. It is important to be mindful of purchase timelines as some regulations may require more time for property acquisition. Additionally, all transactions related to real estate involve the payment of certain fees and taxes including a registration fee, tax on rental income, and a 4% transfer fee. It is essential to get legal advice when purchasing a property to ensure all registration processes are completed correctly and in accordance with the law. Furthermore, it is recommended to carefully review the sale agreement, understand payment terms, and check that all documents are in order prior to finalizing a transaction," said one expat in Abu Dhabi.
Are foreigners allowed to own property in Abu Dhabi?

"Foreigners are allowed to own property in Abu Dhabi, but with certain restrictions. In 2006, the government of Abu Dhabi introduced a law permitting foreign ownership of properties in designated investment zones. These zones are specifically created for foreign investors, allowing them to have freehold ownership of properties within these areas. However, outside of these investment zones, foreigners can only own leasehold properties with lease periods of up to 99 years. It is important for foreign investors to be aware of the specific rules and regulations governing property ownership in Abu Dhabi and to consult with local experts before making any investment decisions," said one person in Abu Dhabi.
What appliances are typically included in a rental?
We asked foreigners in Abu Dhabi what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:
"Rental properties in Abu Dhabi generally come with kitchen appliances such as a refrigerator and oven, as well as air conditioning units and a water heater. Many properties come with a washing machine and dryer, although some may require a separate agreement from the landlord. Internet connections are increasingly commonly pre-installed in rental properties, as are satellite TV connections," wrote one expat who made the move to Abu Dhabi.
