What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Calgary?

"Live in a Condo so I don't have to worry about yardwork. Some expats live in houses and apartments, there is a wide variety to choose from," said one expat who made the move to Calgary.

Many of the apartments and homes have balconies or patios, and some have access to a shared outdoor space. "Housing costs are definitely lower. Paid 140 for a 1200 foot condo, its only four years old so it's all like new," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Calgary.

"The average cost of housing in Calgary is generally considered to be quite high. The median price for a single-family home in Calgary is around $450,000, while the median price for a condo is around $300,000. Renting is also quite expensive, with the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment being around $1,400 per month," explained one person living in Calgary, Canada.

Should I buy or rent a home in Calgary?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Calgary, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Whether to buy or rent a home in Calgary depends on a variety of factors. Buying a home can be a great investment, as it can provide a steady source of income through rental income or appreciation of the property. However, it also requires a large upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs. Renting a home can be a more affordable option, as it requires less of an upfront investment and no maintenance costs. "When buying property in Calgary, it is important to research the local market and understand the current trends. It is also important to consider the location of the property, as well as the amenities and services available in the area. It is also important to consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the taxes and fees associated with purchasing a property. It is also important to consider the condition of the property, as well as any potential renovations or repairs that may be necessary. Finally, it is important to work with a qualified real estate agent who can provide advice and guidance throughout the process," said one person in Calgary.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Calgary?

We asked foreigners in Calgary what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in Calgary typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, washer, and dryer. Other appliances such as microwaves, toasters, and coffee makers may also be included," explained one foreigner living in Calgary, Canada.
