These properties typically include high ceilings, large windows, and balconies with views of the city. Amenities may include a concierge, a fitness center, and a swimming pool. Foreigners are allowed to purchase property in Paris, but there are certain restrictions. For example, foreigners are not allowed to purchase more than one property in the city, and they must have a valid visa and residence permit. The best way for an expat to search for a home to buy in Paris is to use a real estate agent who is familiar with the city and its neighborhoods. We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"When considering finding a place to live in Paris, it is important to research the many options available. Depending on your budget and preferences, you could look for a rental on sites such as Airbnb, SeLoger and LeBonCoin, or explore options on corporate housing sites, such as Nestpick and Homelike. You could also look at real estate agents such as Paris Housing, who will help you to find a home tailored to your needs. Additionally, there is the possibility of finding sublets or long-term accommodations through the many Facebook groups dedicated to helping expats find the perfect living space. Take your time to research and explore the various options, since finding the perfect new home in a city as large and diverse as Paris is no easy task," said one person in Paris, France.

What is the average cost of housing in Paris?

If you are thinking about moving to Paris, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Paris is generally quite expensive, with prices usually ranging between €1200 and €2500 per month for a one bedroom apartment in the city center. Monthly rentals for apartments in the suburbs tend to be cheaper, but can still range between €850 and €1400 per month," said one person in Paris, France.

Should I buy or rent a home in Paris?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Paris, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding to buy or rent a home in Paris, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of each option and carefully analyze one's individual needs and desires. Buying a home in Paris offers the benefit of establishing a lasting presence in the city and allowing the buyer to build equity in their home. However, it also demands a large investment in terms of money and time, as maintenance and upkeep needs must also be taken into account. Renting a home in Paris gives one the flexibility to change location and surroundings more easily than when owning a home, but does require an ongoing commitment of expense. Ultimately, the choice of whether to buy or rent a home in Paris should be based on the individual's particular goals and desired lifestyle," said one person in Paris, France.

What do I need to know when buying property in Paris?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Paris, they said:

"1. Consider hiring a local lawyer to help you navigate the real estate buying process in Paris. 2. Make sure to do due diligence to evaluate the condition of the property, the tenants (if any), and any other legal issues related to the property. 3. The French government imposes property taxes for all real estate owners in Paris, so make sure to save up for it before buying. 4. Research the location of the property to make sure it fulfills all of your needs, such as being close to public transportation and other amenities. 5. If you are planning to purchase real estate as an investment, make sure to investigate the local rental prices and potential return on investments. 6. Consider the cost of upkeep and repairs, as well as the potential hazards in the neighborhood. 7. Talk to the local council and make sure the property complies with all zoning regulations. 8. Be aware of the different types of property titles in Paris and make sure you understand all the conditions associated with buying property in the city," said one person in Paris.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Paris?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Paris, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Paris. Non-residents of France are able to purchase property in the same way as French citizens, however, they must obtain a permit from the local prefecture in order to do so. This permit is known as a ‘carte de séjour’ and is required for any non-resident who wishes to purchase property in France. Additionally, foreign buyers must also pay a tax on the purchase of the property, known as the ‘taxe de mutation’," explained one expat in Paris.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Paris what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"Rental properties in Paris typically include a refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. Many rental properties may also include heating and air conditioning units, microwaves, or other small appliances or kitchen accessories," said one person in Paris.

"Expats can search for homes in Paris by looking online for real estate websites that specialize in the Paris area. They can also contact local real estate agents who can provide information on available properties. Additionally, expats can search for rental listings on websites such as Airbnb or HomeAway. Finally, expats can look for classified ads in local newspapers or online forums to find potential homes," wrote one expat who made the move to Paris.
