How do I find a place to live in Szentendre?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Szentendre, involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a small apartment to a larger family home. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Szentendre to find one that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Some areas may be closer to the city center, while others may be more residential and quiet. Once you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, you can start your search. There are several online real estate portals that list properties for rent or sale in Szentendre, such as ingatlan.com and otthonterkep.hu. These websites allow you to filter your search based on various criteria like location, price, size, and type of property. In addition to online searches, you may also want to consider hiring a local real estate agent. They can provide valuable insight into the local market, help you negotiate prices, and guide you through the legal process of renting or buying a property in Hungary. Visiting the properties you're interested in is an important step. This will give you a better feel for the place and the neighborhood, and allow you to spot any potential issues with the property. Finally, once you've found a place you like, you'll need to secure it. This usually involves signing a lease or purchase agreement and paying a deposit or the purchase price. Make sure to read any contracts carefully and seek legal advice if needed. Remember, finding a place to live can take time, so it's important to start your search well in advance of when you plan to move," explained one person living in Szentendre, Hungary.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Szentendre?

"A typical expat home or apartment in Szentendre, is often a blend of traditional Hungarian architecture and modern amenities. These homes are usually spacious, with high ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The living areas are often open plan, with a large living room that flows into a dining area and kitchen. The kitchen is typically modern and well-equipped, with high-quality appliances and plenty of storage space. The bedrooms are usually generously sized, with ample closet space. Some homes may also have a study or home office, which is a desirable feature for many expats who work from home. The bathrooms are typically modern and well-appointed, often with both a shower and a bathtub. Many expat homes in Szentendre also come with outdoor space, such as a balcony, terrace, or garden. This is particularly common in the more suburban areas of the town. These outdoor spaces are often beautifully landscaped and provide a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. In terms of location, many expats choose to live in the charming old town area of Szentendre, which is full of cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and historic buildings. However, there are also many attractive residential areas outside of the town center, which offer a quieter, more suburban lifestyle. Overall, expat homes in Szentendre are comfortable, modern, and well-located, offering a high standard of living for those who choose to make this charming Hungarian town their home," explained one person living in Szentendre, Hungary.

What is the average cost of housing in Szentendre?

If you are thinking about moving to Szentendre, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Szentendre can vary greatly depending on the type and size of the property. For instance, the price of a one-bedroom apartment in the city center may be around 150,000 to 200,000 Hungarian Forint per month. If you're looking to buy, the average price per square meter for an apartment in the city center can range from 400,000 to 600,000 Hungarian Forint. However, prices can be significantly lower outside of the city center. Please note that these are estimated figures and actual prices may vary," remarked one member in Szentendre.

Should I buy or rent a home in Szentendre?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Szentendre, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"The decision to buy or rent a home in Szentendre, largely depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation, and long-term plans. If you plan to stay in Szentendre for a long period, buying a home could be a good investment. Owning a home allows you to build equity over time and could provide financial security in the future. However, buying a home also comes with additional costs such as maintenance, insurance, and property taxes. It also requires a significant upfront investment for the down payment and closing costs. If you're not ready for these financial commitments, renting might be a better option. Renting a home in Szentendre offers more flexibility. It's a good option if you're not sure about your long-term plans or if you prefer not to deal with the responsibilities of homeownership. Renting can also be more affordable in the short term, as it doesn't require a large upfront investment. However, renting doesn't build equity and the monthly payments could increase over time. You also have less control over your living space, as you can't make significant changes without the landlord's permission. In conclusion, both buying and renting a home in Szentendre have their pros and cons. It's important to carefully consider your financial situation, lifestyle, and future plans before making a decision. Consulting with a real estate professional or financial advisor could also be helpful," said one person in Szentendre.
