Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can range from around 500 to 800 Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) per month, while rent for a three-bedroom apartment in the city center can range from around 800 to 1,500 MYR per month. Outside of the city center, rent for a one-bedroom apartment can range from around 400 to 600 MYR per month, while rent for a three-bedroom apartment can range from around 600 to 1,000 MYR per month," said one person in Malacca.

Should I buy or rent a home in Malacca?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Malacca, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Malacca can be a great investment. The city is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere, making it an attractive place to live. The cost of living in Malacca is relatively low compared to other cities in Malaysia, making it an affordable option for those looking to purchase a home. Additionally, the city offers a variety of housing options, from traditional terraced houses to modern apartments. Renting a home in Malacca is also an option, and can be a great way to experience the city without the commitment of buying a home. Renting can also be a more affordable option for those who are not ready to commit to a long-term purchase," said one person in Malacca.

What do I need to know when buying property in Malacca?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Malacca, they said:

"When buying property in Malacca, it is important to research the local market and understand the current trends. It is also important to be aware of the legal requirements for purchasing property in the country, such as the need for a valid title deed and the need to register the property with the local land office. It is also important to be aware of any restrictions or regulations that may apply to the property, such as zoning laws or building codes. Additionally, it is important to be aware of any taxes or fees that may be applicable to the purchase of the property. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local infrastructure and amenities, such as transportation, schools, and healthcare, to ensure that the property is in a desirable location," explained one foreigner living in Malacca, Malaysia.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Malacca?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Malacca, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Malacca. However, there are certain restrictions and requirements that must be met. Foreigners can purchase residential properties, such as condominiums, apartments, and landed properties, but the minimum purchase price for these properties is set by the state government and may vary depending on the location. Additionally, foreigners are required to obtain approval from the State Authority before purchasing any property. It is also important to note that foreigners are not allowed to purchase properties designated as Malay Reserved Land or properties allocated to Bumiputera (indigenous Malaysians)," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Malacca.

What appliances are typically included in a rental?

We asked foreigners in Malacca what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In a rental property in Malacca, tenants can typically expect to find a refrigerator, stove, oven, washing machine, and air conditioning unit. Additionally, some properties may also include a microwave, water heater, and other small appliances," wrote one expat who made the move to Malacca.
