"Expat homes and apartments in Lagos are typically modern and comfortable, with plenty of natural light and airy spaces. Many of the apartments have balconies or terraces with views of the city or the nearby beaches. "The cost of housing in Lagos is generally quite reasonable. Prices vary depending on the size and location of the property, but the average cost of a two-bedroom apartment in the city centre is around €500-€600 per month. Outside of the city centre, prices can be lower, with two-bedroom apartments costing around €400-€500 per month," remarked one foreigner who made the move to Lagos.

Should I buy or rent a home in Lagos?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Lagos, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Whether you should buy or rent a home in Lagos depends on your individual needs and preferences. Buying a home in Lagos can be a great investment, as the city is a popular tourist destination and real estate prices are likely to increase over time. However, if you are only planning to stay in Lagos for a short period of time, renting may be a better option as it can be more cost-effective and flexible. Additionally, renting can give you the opportunity to explore different neighborhoods and find the one that best suits your lifestyle. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Lagos should be based on your individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Lagos.

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Lagos, they said:

"1. It is important to research the local market and understand the current trends in the area before making a purchase. 2. It is also important to understand the legal requirements for buying property in Lagos, such as obtaining a tax number and registering with the local tax office. 3. It is advisable to seek professional advice from a lawyer or real estate agent to ensure that all legal requirements are met. 4. It is important to consider the location of the property and the surrounding area, as well as the condition of the property itself. 5. It is also important to consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of public services and amenities. 6. It is important to be aware of any restrictions or regulations that may apply to the property, such as zoning laws or building codes. 7. It is also important to consider the potential for rental income or capital appreciation when making a purchase," said one in Lagos.

Are foreigners allowed to own property in Lagos?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in Lagos, they said...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Lagos. Non-residents of Portugal are allowed to purchase property in the country, however, they must obtain a tax identification number from the Portuguese Tax Authority in order to do so. Additionally, foreign buyers must also obtain a Portuguese residency permit if they wish to stay in the country for more than 90 days," explained one expat in Lagos.

"In a rental property in Lagos, tenants can typically expect to find a refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer. Additionally, some properties may include a microwave, toaster, and other small kitchen appliances," explained one person living in Lagos, Portugal.
