What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Chania?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Chania about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for public healthcare if you are working and paying social security. However, many expats choose to use private healthcare for more personalized care. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during pregnancy and childbirth, so it's important to find a healthcare provider you can communicate with effectively. Thirdly, you should consider taking prenatal classes. These classes can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and they can also be a great way to meet other expectant parents in Chania. Fourthly, you should familiarize yourself with the local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. Greek culture has many traditions related to childbirth, and understanding these can help you feel more integrated into the local community. Fifthly, you should prepare all the necessary documents for your baby's birth certificate and passport. As an expat, you will need to register your baby's birth with both the local authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate. Lastly, you should make sure you have a support network in place. Having a baby in a foreign country can be challenging, so it's important to have people you can rely on for help and support. This could be other expat parents, local friends, or family members who live nearby," wrote a member who made the move to Chania, Greece.
