What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Trois-Ilets?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Trois-Ilets about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Martinique. The island has a high standard of healthcare, with many doctors speaking English. However, it's always beneficial to learn some basic French medical terms. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. The cost of having a baby in Martinique can be high, especially if complications arise. Find a good obstetrician and pediatrician early on. Ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Prepare for the possibility that certain amenities and comforts common in your home country may not be available in Martinique. For example, epidurals are not always standard in Martinique's hospitals. Research the customs and traditions surrounding childbirth in Martinique. Understanding these can help you feel more comfortable and integrated into the local culture. Make sure your passport and visa are up to date, and understand the process for registering your baby's birth and obtaining a passport for them if you plan to travel after the birth. Finally, connect with other expat parents in Martinique. They can provide invaluable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time in your life," commented one expat who made the move to Trois-Ilets, Martinique.
