What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Vilcabamba?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Vilcabamba if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Vilcabamba, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid making negative comments about the country or its people, as this is considered disrespectful. When greeting someone, a handshake is common, but avoid hugging or kissing unless you know the person well. It's also considered rude to interrupt someone while they're speaking, so wait for your turn to talk. In Ecuador, punctuality is not as strictly observed as in some other countries, so don't be offended if someone is late for a meeting or appointment. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or personal finances unless you know the person well. When dining, it's polite to finish all the food on your plate as leaving food can be seen as wasteful or ungrateful. It's also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas. Finally, always ask for permission before taking photos of people or private property," commented one expat who made the move to Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
