What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Abidjan?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Abidjan if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"Not yet, but with my fractured French and slightly clueless personality, I'm sure I will," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Abidjan. It is considered impolite to show public displays of affection, so it is best to avoid kissing or hugging in public. It is also important to dress modestly, as revealing clothing is considered inappropriate. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language. Finally, it is important to be respectful of religious beliefs and to avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics or religion," commented one expat who made the move to Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
