What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Amman?
We asked people in Amman if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...
"When visiting Amman, it is important to dress modestly, especially for women, by covering your shoulders, chest, and knees. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are considered inappropriate in Jordanian culture. Do not use your left hand for eating or passing objects, as it is considered unclean. Be respectful of Islamic customs, such as not eating, drinking, or smoking in public during the holy month of Ramadan. Avoid discussing sensitive topics like politics and religion, as these conversations can lead to misunderstandings. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, especially women. Do not refuse offers of tea or coffee, as it is considered impolite. Lastly, be aware of gender segregation in certain social situations and follow local customs accordingly," wrote a member who made the move to Amman, Jordan.
