What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Algiers. They wrote...
"Lack of safety ie electrics, windons on 6th floor that fully open, wires coming out of plug sockets and connecting to street electric viva wires from your window. The metality of the middle aged me here... will ingore women, cut you up on the road then beep at you like its your fault! The lack of children groups and support for parents. How close family life is," said another expat in Algiers, Algeria.
"One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Algiers is navigating different expectations regarding gender roles, as there is a wide range of traditional and modern beliefs concerning gender. Additionally, expats may find it difficult to cope with the strict cultural protocols around building relationships, as Algerian culture places a strong emphasis on maintaining social harmony and relationships of trust. Additionally, navigating the informal economy and bureaucracy can be difficult for expats in Algeria, as both rely heavily on cultural customs and norms that may be unfamiliar to those coming from abroad. Finally, expats in Algiers may find it hard to adjust to the local diet, which can be quite different to that of other countries, as well as the general lack of understanding of foreign customs," wrote a member who made the move to Algiers, Algeria, Algeria.
