What do I need to know before retiring in The Algarve?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to The Algarve, they said...
"Before retiring in The Algarve, expats should be aware of the cost of living, which is generally higher than other parts of Portugal. Expats should also research the local healthcare system and ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage. Additionally, expats should familiarize themselves with the Portuguese language and culture, as English is not widely spoken in the region. Finally, expats should research the local tax laws and regulations to ensure they are compliant with all applicable laws," said a member in The Algarve, Portugal.

"If there is any area in Portugal where English IS widely spoken, it's the Algarve, because of all the tourists. We have lived here for a year and as yet speak very little Portuguese but have never had any problems communicating with anyone. In fact if you try in your broken Portuguese they often reply to you in English, as their English is probably going to be a lot better than your Portuguese! Translation apps help also," remarked another expat who made the move to The Algarve, Portugal.
