As a foreigner living in Riga, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Riga if they have access to public healthcare in Riga. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Riga, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have registered with the Latvian Health Care System and have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private health insurance. The public healthcare system in Latvia offers a range of services, including primary care, specialist consultations, hospital treatment, and emergency care. However, it is important to note that the quality of public healthcare in Latvia may not be on par with Western European standards, and there might be long waiting times for certain treatments. Additionally, not all medical staff may speak fluent English, which could pose communication challenges. Many foreigners living in Latvia opt for private healthcare services, which offer a higher standard of care and shorter waiting times, but at a higher cost," explained one expat living in Riga, Latvia.
