What do people like (and dislike) about Kampala?

Answer this Question

When we asked expats and global nomads what they like and dislike about living in Kampala, they replied...

"Expats and digital nomads living in Kampala, often appreciate the friendly and welcoming nature of the local people, making it easy to form connections and friendships. They also enjoy the vibrant culture, which includes a lively music scene, colorful markets, and a variety of local and international cuisine. The relatively low cost of living is another attractive aspect, as it allows for a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. The city's mild climate, with warm temperatures and a mix of sunshine and rain, is generally pleasant for those who prefer to avoid extreme weather conditions. Additionally, Kampala's central location makes it a convenient base for exploring the natural beauty of Uganda, including national parks, wildlife reserves, and the stunning Lake Victoria. However, there are also some challenges that expats and digital nomads may face while living in Kampala. Traffic congestion is a common issue, with poorly maintained roads and a lack of public transportation options contributing to long commutes and delays. This can also make it difficult to navigate the city, especially for those who are not familiar with the area. Another concern is the inconsistent availability of reliable internet, which can be a significant obstacle for digital nomads who rely on connectivity for their work. Power outages are also relatively common, which can further disrupt productivity and daily routines. Safety and security can be a concern in some parts of the city, with petty crime and theft being more prevalent in certain areas. Expats and digital nomads should take precautions to protect their belongings and personal safety, such as avoiding walking alone at night and being aware of their surroundings. Lastly, the quality of healthcare in Kampala may not be up to the standards that some expats and digital nomads are accustomed to. While there are some private clinics and hospitals that offer decent care, it may be necessary to travel outside of Uganda for more specialized treatment or in case of a serious medical emergency," explained one expat living in Kampala, Uganda.
